Judge Chasteen  was elected as a Superior Court Judge of the Cordele Judicial Circuit in 2004 and re-reelected in 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020. He served as Municipal Court Judge in Ben Hill County from 2000-2004. From 1969-2004, Judge Chasteen was a partner with Mills & Chasteen, P.C. a law firm located in his hometown of Fitzgerald, Georgia. Judge Chasteen served as county attorney for Ben Hill County for thirty-five years and served as President of the State Bar of Georgia from 1995-1996.

Judge Chasteen earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Georgia in 1966 and graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1969 where he was the research and projects editor for the University of Georgia Law Review. Judge Chasteen continues to be a positive influence and role model as he gives of his time and resources to many educational, business, civic, church, and State Bar of Georgia activities. He and his wife, the former Margaret Mills of Fitzgerald, have two daughters and three grandchildren.
