Judge Sonja N. Brown
The Honorable Sonja Natasha Brown began her service as a Cobb County Superior Court Judge on January 1, 2023. Judge Brown previously served the citizens of Cobb County as a full-time Magistrate Court Judge.
Prior to her appointment to the bench, Judge Brown served as the Director of Community Affairs/Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney with the Office of the DeKalb County District Attorney - Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit, the DeKalb County Solicitor-General’s Office as a Deputy Chief Assistant Solicitor-General and worked as a Chief Senior Assistant District Attorney with the Office of the Fulton County District Attorney, where she was assigned to the Crimes against Women and Children Unit (CAWAC).
Judge Brown served as the 2009 President of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (GABWA), and is a member of the Cobb Bar Association; Atlanta Bar Association; the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (GABWA); Gate City Bar Association; the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL); the Lawyers Club of Atlanta (LCA); the National Bar Association (NBA); the Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia, and the Weltner Family Law Inn of Court. Judge Brown is also a member of the Council of Superior Court Judges, where she serves on the Legislation and Bench & Bar committees and Chairs the Resolution Committee.
Judge Brown serves on the Board of Directors of the Tommy Nobis Center (TNC). She has participated in Covenant House Georgia’s annual Sleep Out: Executive Edition, which raises awareness about youth homelessness, and she chaired the 5th annual, Sleep Out: Women Unite!
Judge Brown is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, the Cobb Executive Women (CEW) Group, and LiveSafe Resources’ Academy of Women Leaders
Judge Brown has received numerous awards and accolades, including being named one of LiveSafe Resources’ 2023 Women of Achievement Honorees, and GABWA’s Bensonetta Tipton Lane Award for Commitment to the Family, which recognizes a GABWA member who has used her professional, and personal leadership to strengthen the community through family, and child-related programs, and initiatives, including those that focus on education, domestic violence, health care, child advocacy, adoption, and other issues impacting the family. In 2009, Judge Brown was named a Distinguished Alumni by Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.
Judge Brown is the proud auntie of two nieces and four nephews.
Judge Brown earned her Juris Doctor at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, a Master of Arts in Christian Practice (MACP) Degree from Duke Divinity School, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Media Arts (Radio/TV/Film) from Clark Atlanta University.
