Karine P. Burney has been exclusively practicing family law since 2005. Prior to forming Burney & Reese, Karine was a partner at Kessler & Solomiany in Atlanta. Karine is a fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and received the Georgia Chapter Distinguished AAML Award in 2022. There are only approximately 32 AAML fellows in the State of Georgia, and Karine is one of the youngest.
Karine is also the Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee of the State Bar of Georgia Family Law Section. She will be sworn in as the Chair of the Family Law Section in July, 2023. She previously served as President of the Cobb County Bar Association Family Law Section and Fundraising Chair of the Family Law Institute. Karine is co-chairing the Family Law Institute that will take place this year at Amelia Island in June, 2023.
She has been recognized as a Georgia Super Lawyer since 2020 and was recognized as a Georgia Super Lawyers Rising Star from 2013 through 2019. She has also served as a Special Assistant District Attorney in Cobb County to prosecute nuisance actions in a continued effort to combat sex trafficking since 2018.
Jonathan Dunn has managed the firm of Jonathan V. Dunn, P.C., since its inception in late 2018. His principal practice areas include Family Law and Criminal Defense. Jonathan currently serves as Chair to the Executive Committee of the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia and is a former editor of the Family Law Review.
Jonathan was previously a founding partner in the firm of Johnson, Kraeuter & Dunn, from 2012-2018, an associate at McCorkle & Johnson, from 2008-2012, and an Assistant District Attorney with the Eastern Judicial Circuit from 2003-2008. Before moving to Savannah in 2003, Jonathan was an associate at the firm of Thompson & Sweeny, in Lawrenceville.
Jonathan was admitted to the practice of law in 2002 after graduating from the University of Georgia School of Law. He received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Latin at Mercer University, and is privileged to have taught English and coached Wrestling at Landmark Christian School in Fairburn for two years between his undergraduate studies and law school.
Jonathan is pleased to call Savannah his home, where he and his wife, Sharnette, have raised their two sons, Hunter and Stewart, and he enjoys availing himself of volunteer and sponsorship opportunities at Benedictine Military School, America's Second Harvest, the 1804 Club, and the Central Savannah River Area Heart Ball.

Adam Gleklen has been practicing domestic litigation since 1995 has been a solo practitioner at his own law firm, The Gleklen Law Firm, since January 2015. Hannah-Lynn Apicelli is a proud Atlanta native and “Double Panther.” She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Georgia State University, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors Distinction. Hannah returned to Georgia State University to attend their College of Law, where she received her Juris Doctor in 2019.
While in law school, she focused her studies on social welfare and civil liberties. As a student in the Olmstead Disability Rights Clinic, she advocated on behalf of individuals with disabilities in both administrative and educational arenas. Hannah also served as the Co-President of Georgia State University’s chapter of the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund.
Hannah practices family law, military law, and criminal defense. She is a member of the State of Georgia Bar Association, Georgia Family Law Section, and the Georgia Young Lawyers Division.
In her spare time, you can usually find her at home with her husband, Trevor, their three cats, and two crazy dogs, where she is probably watching The Real Housewives and doing a jigsaw puzzle.
Alexa N. Lewis was born in Poughkeepsie, New York and moved to Georgia in February 1996. She attended the University of Georgia and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2009. Alexa received her law degree from Georgia State University College of Law. While at Georgia State, she was a member of the Student Trial Lawyers Association where she was able to practice and learn litigation skills by competing in multiple competitions including the National Trial Competition in Charlotte, North Carolina and National Trial Advocacy Competition at Michigan State University. Alexa was also a member of the Georgia State Moot Court Team where she competed in the Emory Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Competition and the Prince Evidence Competition at the Brooklyn Law School.
Alexa practices family law, military law, and cases involving Title IX and ROTC dis-enrollment.
Alexa is a member of the State of Georgia Bar Association, Georgia Family Law Section, Georgia Young Lawyers Division, DeKalb County Bar Association, and the family law section of the DeKalb bar.
An Atlanta-native, Alexandra Manning served our county in the Army and spent over fifteen years in law enforcement before becoming an attorney. She was a pioneer as one of the first waves of female certified firefighters. She went on to be a lead agent in the GBI. She served as a detective and K-9 handler and received both a Medal of Valor and Police Officer of the Year. While getting her undergraduate degree at Mercer University, she worked as senior investigator for the prosecution with the Fulton County DA’s Office in the Crimes Against Women and Children Unit and later the defense at the Douglas County Public Defender’s Office.
After graduating from Mercer, Alex went to Vermont Law School. Her time in private practice includes time as a judicial staff attorney and extensive experience in criminal, family law, and civil matters. Judge Manning serves as a Judicial Officer in the Family Division of the Superior Court of Fulton County presiding over Family Division cases. She also presides as a judge in Superior Court criminal bond and preliminary hearings and sits pro hac in Juvenile Court. She is an appointed Probate Court officer. Judge Manning previously served as a part-time judge in the Magistrate Court of Fulton County.
In the Family Division, Judge Manning hears cases on some of the largest, most contentious, and sensitive calendars on the Family Division’s docket. Judge Manning consistently and with utmost respect for the rule of law, handles them with balanced fairness, compassion, and efficiency. She has presided over nearly 15,000 TPO cases and has an average monthly case load of: 450 ex parte TPOs; 100 vital record amendments and name changes; 200 child support cases; and 200 12-month TPOs.
The Stonewall Bar Association awarded Judge Manning with its 2018 Conspicuous Service to the Stonewall Community for her longstanding commitment to equality. Alex’s advocacy for the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell led to a ban on military recruiting on college campuses and the Obama Administration’s end to DADT. The Cobb County Bar Association recognized Alex with Volunteer of the Year award in 2016 for her extensive pro bono work with Cobb Legal Aid.
Alex has served on the boards of the Stonewall Bar Association, Atlanta Bar Association, and Georgia Association of Women Lawyers.
Alex and her wife, Lisa Liang, live in Midtown. They are active in the community with bar associations, the Anti-Defamation League, Trees Atlanta, Foreverfamily, Nicholas House, and Midtown High School.
Steve Shewmaker is the founding partner of Shewmaker & Lewis in Atlanta, Georgia. Steve is a native of the Southeast, growing up in Texas and Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama on cross country and Army ROTC scholarships and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1990. Steve was commissioned as an Army Officer in 1990. Steve served as an Infantry Officer in the 25th Infantry Division and later served in Military Intelligence assignments at Fort Hood, Texas and in the Middle East. Steve served his last eleven years in the Army as a Judge Advocate, deploying twice. He retired from the Army in 2018.
In 2005, Steve earned his law degree from the Georgia State University College of Law where he graduated with honors. Steve and his wife, Patty, formed Shewmaker & Shewmaker in 2009, where they represent clients in domestic, criminal and military justice matters. In 2019, Shewmaker & Shewmaker was renamed Shewmaker & Lewis.
Steve is admitted to practice with the State Bar of Georgia, the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Georgia Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, and the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, and he is admitted to practice in the military trial courts (worldwide) as well as the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals.
Steve and Patty have been married for 23 years. They have one daughter, Molly, who is now 15 and a half, and two dogs, Elsa a black lab and Cookie a German Shorthaired Pointer. Steve once broke into a woman’s prison, and another time he found $20,000 in his attic – no joke.
Zain is the CEO of Etheia, a family law software company that helps attorneys and forensic accountants uncover hidden assets. He has deep expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and has been building production-grade machine learning systems for the last three years. As someone who's worked with attorneys across the US to modernize their practice, Zain is a firm believer that technology can create win-win outcomes for firms and their clients.
Andrew “Drew” Wilkes is a partner with Oliver Maner LLP. Mr. Wilkes maintains an active trial practice throughout southeastern Georgia. For the last 20 years, he has focused on assisting clients with all aspects of family law needs.
A native of Hazlehurst, Georgia, Drew graduated from the University of Georgia (’99), where he received his B.B.A. degree in Banking and Finance. Mr. Wilkes attended the Walter F. George School of Law (’02) at Mercer University where he received his Juris Doctorate.
Outside of his law practice, Mr. Wilkes is an active member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church. He also serves as a board member with Urban Hope Savannah, a non-profit organization that provides support to inner city children of Savannah through after school and summer programs. Mr. Wilkes has also volunteered as an attorney-coach for the Georgia High School Mock Trial Association and as an attorney advisor for Learning for Life’s Law and Government Explorer Post.
Judge Elizabeth Gobeil was appointed by Governor Deal to the Court of Appeals of Georgia on June 5, 2018 and was elected statewide in 2020. She’s a graduate of Emory University and the UGA School of Law. Judge Gobeil spent the bulk of her career practicing general civil and life sciences law, including serving as a partner at Thompson Hine, LLP. and as in house counsel for two global pharmaceutical companies. Immediately prior to joining the bench, she was a Board member and Appellate Division Judge for the State Board of Workers’ Compensation, a position Governor Deal appointed her to serve in November of 2012. Early in her career, she worked in Washington, DC for the late U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell, where she met her husband Bart.
Currently, Judge Gobeil serves on the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism, the Judicial Council Ad Hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence and the Courts (where she co-chairs the taskforce's subcommittee on access to justice and community engagement), the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Continuing Judicial Education (ICJE), and Emory University’s Board of Visitors. Among other involvements, she is a member of the Rotary Club of Savannah, the State Bar of Georgia, the Savannah Bar Association, the Lawyers Club of Atlanta, the Bleckley Inn of Court, and the Community Council of the Savannah Classical Academy.
Originally from Thomaston, Georgia, she and Bart now reside in Savannah, Georgia with their beloved (and spoiled) dog, Dutton.
Judge Todd Markle has served on the Georgia Court of Appeals since his appointment in December 2018. He was previously a trial judge on the Superior Court of Fulton County after practicing law in Atlanta from 1989 until 2010.
Chief Judge Brian M. Rickman was appointed to the Georgia Court of Appeals in November 2015 by Governor Nathan Deal and took office on January 1, 2016.
Born in Madison County, Georgia, Judge Rickman was a jailer working in the Rabun County Detention Center before entering Piedmont College where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in 1998. He earned his Juris Doctor from The University of Georgia School of Law in 2001. While in law school he was a member of the Mock Trial Board and was involved in the Prosecutorial Clinic. Judge Rickman was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia on October 29th, 2001. He began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney for the Alcovy Judicial Circuit and then the Mountain Judicial Circuit. In 2004 he left the District Attorney’s Office to become a partner in a small town law firm in Rabun County, Georgia. He was a partner at Stockton & Rickman. At Stockton & Rickman, in addition to taking on whatever clients came through the door, including several pro bono cases, he was involved in civil litigation and was defense counsel in several cases including murder cases. In 2008, Judge Rickman was appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to be the District Attorney for the Mountain Judicial Circuit and this was the position Judge Rickman held prior to taking office at The Georgia Court of Appeals.
In 2004, Judge Rickman became an adjunct professor at Piedmont College. He has taught several courses, including, American Government, Criminal Law and Procedure, and Courts and Society. He is a member of the Piedmont College Board of Trustees.
Judge Rickman was involved in several Professional Organizations as District Attorney. He was a member of the Georgia Board of Public Safety. The Georgia Board of Public Safety has statutory oversight over the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Georgia Department of Public Safety, and the Georgia Public Training Center. He was elected to be Secretary of the Georgia Board of Public Safety. Judge Rickman also served on the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council as the Board of Public Safety representative. Judge Rickman was elected by colleagues to serve on The Prosecuting Attorney’s Council of Georgia. The Prosecuting Attorney’s Council has statutory oversight over the State budget and training of Georgia’s District Attorney’s Offices. He served as chairman of the Personnel Committee.
In 2008, Judge Rickman was a recipient of the Piedmont College Alumni Association’s Pacesetter Award. In 2013 he was named by the Fulton Daily Report as a “40 under 40 On the Rise,” selection.
Judge Rickman’s most important role is as husband to his wife, Maggie, and father to his two young children.
Rebecca Crumrine Rieder (“Becca”) served as a Superior Court Judge in Fulton County Georgia through December 2020 at which time she began a full-time alternative dispute resolution practice, Resolute Law, LLC. As a former civil litigator, domestic relations attorney and Superior Court Judge she has decades of experience as a litigator, Guardian ad Litem, mediator, and arbitrator. Becca currently sits on the Supreme Court of Georgia Commission on Dispute Resolution as a Member, where she serves on the Ethics Committee and the Training and Credentials Committee.
Recognized by her peers and the legal community as one of the top-rated attorneys in Georgia, Becca is a past chair of the Family Law Sections of the State Bar of Georgia, Atlanta Bar Association, and the DeKalb Bar Association. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers; and, prior to taking the bench, Law & Politics and Atlanta Magazine repeatedly recognized Becca as one of Georgia’s “Top 100 Lawyers” and “Top 50 Women Lawyers.” She previously served as past chair of the DeKalb Bar Association and on the board of Dekalb Volunteer Lawyers Foundation.
Prior to obtaining her JD, Becca taught middle and high school English and History.
Becca received her undergraduate degree from Sewanee: The University of the South in 1991, her MEd from the University of Georgia in 1994, and her JD from the University of Georgia School of Law in 2001.
Becca frequently authors materials and speaks on professional and legal matters throughout the state and the country.
Becca believes in giving back to her community both professionally and personally. Becca has extensive community involvement including volunteer leadership roles with several non-profit boards throughout metro Atlanta, including Oakland Cemetery, DeKalb Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, Neighbor in Need and Breakthru House Woman’s Advisory Board. Currently, Becca serves the Georgia Commission on Dispute Resolution (Member & Ethics Committee); the Atlanta Bar Association (Immediate Past Chair); her alma mater, Sewanee as the immediate past chair of the Alumni Council, as a member of the Board of Trustees; and, as a member of the Bascom Board in Highlands, North Carolina.
Becca resides in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband, Doug Rieder.
Judge Kimberly A. Childs was elected in May 2016, winning a contested three-way race for an open seat on the Cobb County Judicial Circuit Superior Court bench. She was re-elected again in 2020 and qualified in 2024 with no opposition.
Before her election, Judge Childs represented businesses and their owners in a variety of commercial disputes. She routinely litigated complex matters in courtrooms across metro-Atlanta.
Between her undergraduate studies and law school, Judge Childs worked as a guard at the DeKalb County Jail and later as a paralegal at a small law firm in Cobb County. These experiences inspired her to further her education and provided a “real world” foundation for her commitment to our justice system.
Judge Childs has been active in the local bar for many years. She served as President of the Cobb County Bar Association in 2017-20018. Before that, she was the President-Elect, Treasurer,Secretary, Trustee, Business Law & Litigation Section President, Solo/Small Firm Section Secretary, Women of the Bar Section President. In 2015, she received the President’s Award from the Cobb Bar.
Judge Childs is a member of Lawyers Club of Atlanta. She serves on the State Bar of Georgia’s Bench & Bar Committee, Court Technology Justice Committee, and the Uniform Superior Court Rules Committee of the Council of Superior Court Judges. She currently represents the Cobb Judicial Circuit on the State Bar Board of Governors.
Judge Childs presides over the Cobb County Drug Treatment Court. DTC is an accountability court designed to manage individuals with substance addiction by providing an alternative to the traditional justice system. DTC is designed to improve the health of our participants, not only by addressing the immediate symptoms of their addiction but also orienting participants to a new way of healthier living that can be continued for the rest of their life.
Judge Childs graduated magna cum laude from Georgia State University College of Law. At Georgia State, she was on the editorial board of Law Review and received numerous academic honors. She obtained her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from North Georgia College.
Before serving on the bench, her skills in and out of the courtroom earned her top honors, including being recognized as a Georgia Super Lawyer, a Georgia Super Lawyer Rising Star, and one of the Business Law Legal Elite. In 2016, Judge Childs was named to the Top 100 Georgia Super Lawyers list, as well as one of the Top 50 Women Super Lawyers in both 2015 & 2016.
On a personal note, Judge Childs is a steadfast and passionate fan of the Atlanta Falcons. She also enjoys watching Atlanta United, the Hawks, and the Braves.

Amanda Love has been a Family Law attorney in the Savannah area for over fifteen years. She is the Director of Family Law Services for the Mediation Center of the Coastal Empire and is the Director of the Guardian Ad Litem Program for Chatham County. Amanda has been a Guardian Ad Litem for over eight years and has presented on a variety of topics during that time. As a Partner in the Divorce Litigation Support Practice at Frazier & Deeter, Beth Garrett primarily assists high-net-worth individuals and corporate executives with divorce, tax and accounting issues. Sherri L.S. Holder is a Certified Public Accountant, Accredited in Business Valuation and Certified in Financial Forensics (CPA/ABV/CFF) and a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA). She has more than 25 years of experience in public accounting and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants (GSPCA) and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA).
For more than 20 years, she has focused in the area of family law litigation, specializing in financial consulting and expert witness services in both bench and jury trials. She has been qualified as an expert over 115 times in numerous jurisdictions in Georgia, testifying in both bench and jury trials. Ms. Holder provides her expertise to law firms and their clients in the areas of forensic and investigative accounting, as well as financial valuation. Her services include income analysis, business valuation, separate property tracing, mediation assistance and trial support.
Ms. Holder is a frequent speaker in family law financial matters, such as business valuations, tax issues and separate property analysis. Ms. Holder is a native of Cobb County where she lives with her husband, Trey, and their two children. When away from the office, Ms. Holder enjoys traveling and is attempting to visit all the National Parks.
Richard Sanders is an attorney with Johnson Kraeuter, LLC, whose practice is primarily dedicated to domestic relations and family law. He has been licensed to practice law in Georgia since 2008. He is also a registered general civil, domestic, and domestic violence mediator, and a registered Arbitrator. Presently, he volunteers as a mediator at the Mediation Center in Savannah.

An Atlanta native, Judge Bailey was born in DeKalb County, City of Decatur. The Honorable LaTisha Dear Jackson was elected Superior Judge of the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit in 2018. In both 2021 and 2022, Judge Jackson was selected to serve by designation as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia on two separate cases. Her service in 2022 was historic in that it was the first time the Supreme Court had an all-woman bench preside over oral arguments. After just nine months in office, Judge Jackson began serving as a Presiding Judge over Track 1 of the Circuit’s Drug Court. After a year of service, Judge Jackson was unanimously elected to serve as the Presiding Judge for the Circuit’s four Accountability Courts. In 2022, Judge Jackson was elected to serve as the Chief Judge of the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit as well as the Administrative Judge for the Fourth Judicial Administrative District which is comprised of DeKalb and Rockdale Circuits.

Judge Shannon Wallace was appointed to the Superior Court bench by Governor Brian Kemp and was sworn in as the 4th Superior Court Judge in Cherokee County on January 30, 2023. Prior to becoming a Superior Court Judge, she was the District Attorney of the Blue Ridge Judicial District, Cherokee County, serving from January 1, 2013, until January 29, 2023.
As the District Attorney, she held numerous statewide leadership roles. She served as the Secretary-Treasurer (2018-19), President-Elect (2019-20), President (2020-21), and Immediate Past President (2021-22) of the District Attorneys’ Association of Georgia and served as the Secretary (2019-2021) and Chairperson (2021-2023) of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia. She was also a co-chair of Governor Kemp’s Judicial Nominating Commission of Georgia from 2018 until October 2022.

As a former prosecutor and lead judicial ethics enforcement official for over 20 years, Chuck has tried well over 100 cases resulting in successful jury verdicts involving public corruption, murder, human trafficking, sexual assault, technology-facilitated crimes, and child abuse in several jurisdictions across the state. He has also successfully defended public officials at trial and on appeal regarding their right to hold public office. A Fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, Chuck is recognized as an expert in trial advocacy, complex investigations, and judicial and legal ethics.
Prior to joining the firm, Chuck was the Director of the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission (JQC), leading the state agency responsible for training and advising all state-level judges on legal and ethical issues, as well as investigating and prosecuting complaints of judicial misconduct. Before being named Director of the JQC, Chuck was the Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney for Cobb County, Georgia, responsible for supervising the Special Victims Unit, Office Training, and other divisions in the office. Chuck previously served as a homicide, major case, and special victims prosecutor in the Atlanta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office and as a prosecutor in the Coweta Judicial Circuit. Chuck has also briefed and argued numerous cases before the Supreme Court of Georgia and the Georgia Court of Appeals.
In recognition for his trial work, Chuck was named Georgia’s Assistant District Attorney of the Year for 2017. Additionally, Chuck received Attorney of the Year Awards for the Cobb Judicial Circuit (2016, 2013) and the Atlanta Judicial Circuit (2007), and the Trial Attorney of the Year for the Atlanta Judicial Circuit (2006). In 2014, the Fulton County Daily Report named Chuck as a “Rising Star” among attorneys under 40.In addition to his work in the courtroom, Chuck has trained judges on judicial ethics, and attorneys, law enforcement officers, public officials, medical providers, non-profit organizations, and business community partners, on investigations, crime prevention, and legal ethics, among other legal matters. In 2011, Chuck traveled to Africa to help train representatives from the countries of Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Eritrea in the investigation and prosecution of human trafficking and smuggling cases. Chuck is a frequent lecturer and presenter locally, nationally, and internationally, and is an Adjunct Law Professor at Georgia State University College of Law. Chuck has testified on numerous occasions as a subject matter expert before Committees in the Georgia House of Representatives and Senate regarding legal issues coming before the Georgia General Assembly, and he has assisted in drafting several bills that have been signed into law, including those positively impacting survivors of sexual abuse and human trafficking.
Chuck is a graduate of Georgia State University College of Law, where he clerked for Senior Superior Court Judge William W. Daniel and edited and re-wrote portions of Judge Daniel’s preeminent trial treatises, Daniel’s Georgia Handbook on Criminal Evidence and Daniel’s Georgia Criminal Trial Practice. Chuck earned his undergraduate degree in Communication Arts with a minor in Journalism from Georgia Southern University.
Jamie Perez has practiced family law since graduating from law school in 2010, beginning her career representing clients in high-asset and complex divorces for five years. She later moved into non-profit leadership, supervising legal services for survivors of intimate partner abuse at Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF) before moving back into private family law litigation.
Jamie is passionate about serving clients with compassion, empathy, and professionalism, understanding that family law litigation takes a significant toll on those involved. She aims to make the process as seamless and peaceful as possible for clients navigating a complicated and difficult time in their lives.
Jamie serves as a member-at-large of the State Bar of Georgia’s Family Law Section Executive Committee, and has been elected Secretary for the 2024-25 bar year. She chaired the Family Law Sponsorship subcommittee from 2021-2023, and served on the Legislative Subcommittee.
Jamie served as a member of the Georgia Judicial COVID-19 Task Force Family Law Subcommittee, Co-Chair of the Fulton County Family Violence Task Force, Board of Directors of the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Co-Chair of the State Bar of Georgia’s Young Lawyers Division Family Law Committee, and the Atlanta Bar Association’s Atlanta Council of Younger Lawyers.
In 2022, the Anti-Defamation League Southeast awarded Jamie the 2022 Emerging Leader Award at their annual Jurisprudence Luncheon for her work toward securing justice and fair treatment for survivors of intimate partner abuse. Jamie was also honored with the 2017 Family Law Institute Kurt Kegel Memorial Scholarship, the 2017 Atlanta Bar Association Family First Award, and the 2015 Kerry Harike Joedecke Atlanta Young Lawyer of the Year Award.
Jamie received her Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law, where she served on the Law Review, and her Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. She spent the first four years of her career in sports marketing before attending law school.
Alice Benton was admitted to the practice of law in the summer of 1994 after graduating cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law. She received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University. Prior to be appointed to the bench by Governor Brian P. Kemp in December 2023 and sworn in on January 10, 2024 as the newest Fulton County Superior Court Judge, Judge Benton practiced family law from 2010 until 2024. Judge Benton is also a former Senior Assistant District Attorney in the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office and former civil litigator.
In addition to litigating family law cases, Judge Benton served as a Guardian Ad Litem for both paying clients and pro bono through A.V.L.F. She has been recognized by her peers as an AV rated lawyer by Martindale Hubbell, as a Super Lawyer, as a Top 10 Attorney (Nationally), and Top 10 Attorney in Georgia Family Law on numerous occasions.
Judge Benton started a two year term as President of the Weltner Family Inn of Court in May of this year and is involved in many volunteer, civic and bar organizations. Currently, Judge Benton volunteers in Atlanta though the National Charity League and volunteers through her church, the Cathedral of St. Philip. She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Atlanta, Inc.
Judge Benton has called the City of Atlanta home since 1994 where she has reared her three children, Mary Eliza, Wells and Ella.
Judge Cheney was appointed to the Atlantic Judicial Circuit bench by Governor Nathan Deal on February 15, 2016. He was engaged in the general practice of law in Reidsville, Georgia prior to his appointment. Judge Cheney is the Judge for the Parent Accountability Court for Liberty County.
Sherriann H. Hicks, of The Hicks Law Group, focuses her legal career on adoption and surrogacy. Sherriann was admitted to practice law in 1995 and she has been an Adoption Fellow in the Academy of Adoption and Assisted Reproduction Attorneys since 2006. Sherriann has served on the Board of the Academy and as Deputy Adoption Director. She is currently President Elect. Sherriann is a Past President and founding Fellow of the Georgia Council of Adoption Lawyers and a Past President of the Gwinnett County Bar Association.
Sherriann specializes in adoptions and surrogacy, and she has handled hundreds of adoptions over her nearly 25 years as a member of the State Bar of Georgia. She represents adoptive parents, relatives, stepparents, and foster parents seeking to expand their family through adoption. She also works with gestational carriers and intended parents who are building their families through assisted reproduction.
Sherriann was involved in drafting and advocating for the passage of adoption legislation which went into effect September 1, 2018, which completely revised for the better Article 1 of Title 19, the Adoption Code.
Sherriann litigates contested adoptions throughout the State of Georgia. Sherriann also serves as Guardian ad litem for the Superior Court Judges in Gwinnett County regularly.
Annie Jordan is a leader in the legal community and champion for equality in access to justice. As Executive Director, Annie oversees the operations of DeKalb Pro Bono, a non-profit organization that provides free legal assistance to marginalized and low-income populations in DeKalb County. She works to develop new programs to match volunteer attorneys with low-income residents who need representation in civil matters such as domestic relations, bankruptcy, landlord tenant disputes, probate issues, consumer debt and representation for victims of domestic violence seeking civil temporary protective orders.
Prior to her current role, Annie had been with DeKalb Pro Bono as a Staff Attorney since 2019 where she ran the Domestic Violence Project. She served the people of DeKalb County by providing representation to low-income persons seeking civil temporary protective orders. In that role, she also worked with the legal community to facilitate volunteer attorneys in providing pro bono legal services to survivors of domestic violence seeking civil protective orders. In addition, she provided advice and assistance to clients in family law matters. As an expert in domestic violence civil litigation, Annie regularly presents at workshops and trainings to educate lawyers and the community about working with survivors of domestic violence.
Before joining DeKalb Pro Bono, Annie worked in private practice at Knight Family Law and Senterfitt & Knight. Her practice focused exclusively on family law and included a full range of family law matters including divorce, custody, support, family violence and stalking, contempt, and modification cases.
Annie is active in the legal community. She is the President of the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers and has served as a Vice President on its Board of Directors since 2015. She has also served on the Family Law Committee of the State Bar of Georgia, Young Lawyers Division and the DeKalb Bar Association, Family Law Section Board of Directors. She is a Barrister in the Cooper Inn of Court and a member of the DeKalb Lawyers Association.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2010 with highest honors and a J.D. from Georgia State University College of Law in 2013.
Grace serves as the Managing Attorney in the Safe Families Office. There, she provides legal assistance and representation to survivors of intimate partner abuse.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Grace is committed to providing legal services to the Atlanta community. Before joining AVLF, Grace was a staff attorney at Atlanta Legal Aid. There, she represented and advised low-income clients on a variety of civil legal matters, including family, housing, consumer, public benefits, and education law.
Grace received her J.D. from Emory University School of Law, graduating with the Pro Bono Publico Award. During law school, she worked with the Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic and interned with AVLF and Atlanta Legal Aid. Grace received a B.S.A. Honors Interdisciplinary Studies degree from the University of Georgia, graduating magna cum laude with Honors from the UGA Honors College.
Kimberly Waldon is a staff attorney and the Program Manager of the Clayton Family Advocacy Office, a specialized project with Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc. Atlanta Legal Aid is a nonprofit that provides legal assistance to people with low incomes in need of civil legal services. Kimberly primarily represents and advises survivors of domestic violence in a range of civil legal services which include: obtaining protective orders; filing and responding to actions for divorce, legitimation, and custody; and securing financial support. She also provides representation and legal assistance to people facing eviction, and those seeking unemployment and other public benefits.
Kimberly is an active member of a number of organizations, including the ABA Commission on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, the Georgia TPO Forum, Clayton State University’s Legal Studies Advisory Committee, the Clayton County Task Force Against Domestic Violence, the Clayton County Bar Association, and the Atlanta Bar Association. Kimberly earned her law degree from UC Davis School of Law in 2018 and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Howard University in 2013. She is admitted to the State Bar of California and the State Bar of Georgia.
